Recruiting in a recession and why retention is key.

As we enter 2023 in a recession, the difficulties businesses saw over the last 12 -18 months with talent shortages post Covid are potentially set to get worse.

The REC (Recruitment and Employment Confederation) have recently published a report which indicates that recruiters are being told that people feel anxious about moving jobs in a recession and may favour job security or at the very least a higher length of service to protect against potential redundancies.

The job market is showing the lowest available vacancies since February 2021, perhaps except for the temporary labour market. Starting salaries are however still on the rise which in turn puts pressure on businesses to consider the real cost of replacement if they lose their current workforce.

So how do you navigate the challenges presented by the recession?

If you are recruiting:

  • Consider carefully where you recruit and use the job boards / methods most likely to attract your target employees.
  • Move quickly – when you find a candidate that matches then don’t delay or wait for a pool of applicants. That pool may never emerge, and you lose the ones that were a match as they get snapped up by your competition!
  • Share the bigger picture. What is the culture, values or vision of your business? Ensure this comes across both in your advertising and when potential applicants check you out online.

Retaining your employees:

  • Salary increases may not be possible and so consider what benefits or perks you can bring to the table that can generate loyalty.
  • Communication is king – especially in a recession where employees may feel uneasy. Be clear on changes in your business or talk openly about the plans during a recession to keep the business on track. Thinking you are protecting your staff from the worry by saying nothing often has the opposite effect.
  • Be proactive in managing performance so you can provide recognition to those who are your superstars. A thankyou goes a long way!

If you would like more support in these areas, then help is here! We have developed 2 new workshops which are ideal for business owners or line managers to attend on these very topics.
