‘Kis’ your work and your career.

I’m sure you’ve heard of the ‘kis’ principle - keep it simple. At work, the simplest way for your employer to ensure things get done is to ask you to do things in writing. For example:

A) We remember all the little things we have to do by making a written list.
B) We make certain work assignment are achieved by making a written plan.
C) We make sure we keep to annual budgets by writing monthly reports.
D) We guarantee projects stay on track by writing progress reviews.
E) We report our actions at meetings and written minutes are produced.

We do all these things as a matter of course, but how many of us do these things, or their equivalent, in our personal lives, particularly for our careers? For your career, the simplest way to make sure your career objective is achieved is to use a simple five step plan:

1) Have a written career objective - a mental one is not sufficient.
2) Convert the objective into a goal by putting a time limit on it.
3) Construct a written plan stating how you intend to achieve it.
4) Act on you plan on a daily basis and write a weekly progress report.
5) Compare your progress with your plan and reread your objective.
